My Hair Loved Me When I Chose Rice Over 'Poo

I LOVE my new hair washing ritual! And my hair is loving me right back for it! It's growing, it's stronger, healthier....Happier!
There's no turning back now....my hair is loving this way too much and so am I!

About a year ago, when we were living in Puerto Vallarta, I stumbled across someone talking about Rice Water Hair Rinse. Here is one of the articles I read about the benefits of Rice Water Rinse and where it originated from.

My fine hair, long uncolored natural white/ blonde hair is very temperamental with products and environment. It will often respond with breaking, split ends, dryness, scalp build up and thinning.
So to read something that said it helped strengthen your hair and helps it grow? I was incredibly intrigued! And of course....had to try it!

So my Rice Water Rinse experiment began.
And I loved it! My hair responded immediately, so of course, I had to keep researching possibilities for other diy hair helps!

Which then lead to Flax Seed Gel......
which led to using only Rice Water without shampoo and then alternating Rice Water and Flax Gel in my washing technique aka ritual.

And ya know, I love it! It's been a year of off and on with how many days or weeks between using shampoo but I have finally found a rhythm that works for me.
My plan is to extend the time between regular shampoo with the goal of getting it down to only once a month. ( or less!)

If you want to try this out, a word of warning, give your hair an adjustment period. It will likely take awhile for your hair to get use to the Rice Water Rinse and you may feel it isn't "Clean" like you are accustom to.
Give it time but don't give up!

 It's worth it!
Less chemicals, less need for washing, less heat exposure and more health and strength in the process!

Here's the article again. Give it a look see and let me know what you think!

Recipes

Rice Water Recipe:

1/4 cup rice of your choice ( just not instant rice ;) )
4 cups water
Mix in glass bowl or jar ( I use a mason jar)
let stand at least 30 mins before using, the longer the better.

An alternate option is to "ferment" the rice water. I do this occasionally too. Leave the rice water to sit at room temp for 24 hrs. You will notice a slightly "sour" smell by this time.
NOTE: Water this down, full strength is too strong for your hair and could cause more harm than good.

Flax Seed Gel:

3 Tbsp Flax Seed
2 Cups Water
Mix both in a saucepan and bring to a simmer.
Simmer until it begins to thicken. Usually around 15 mins.
Strain into glass jar when thickened. Do this while HOT and do it QUICKLY as it gets very hard to strain when it cools.
Store in the fridge for about a week.

My Hair Washing Ritual:
(I typically wash my hair in the shower, but you can do this over the sink, which would likely be easier)

When hair is completely wet, pour about 1/4 of the rice water over your hair. Using your finger tips, work the rice water into your scalp as you would with shampoo for a min or so. Rinse hair.

Scoop some flax gel onto your hair, this is tricky! It is slippery slimey stuff! Work this into your scalp as you would shampoo also. Gently scrub for about a min. Rinse the gel out completely.

Now go back to the rice water.

Alternate between these 2 but ending with the rice water. Leave in your hair for about 10-15 mins before the final rinse.
Wrap in a t-shirt or micro fiber towel ( regular terry cloth towels are really hard on hair)

My final step before letting my hair air dry or blow drying ( if time is an issue) I work flax gel into my scalp, then down onto the ends.

That's it!
I typically go anywhere from 3 to 5 days between my washing ritual and then every 2 weeks or so I do a "regular" shampoo and condition.

I would love to hear what your experience is with Rice Water and Flax Seed Gel. Let me know if you have tried them before or if you are going to try my Hair Washing Ritual!

Have an amazing day <3
